First ASC certified Aquaculture Farm in UK
17 March, 2015
Acoura Marine today issued certification for the Marine Harvest Scotland Leven farm, which is the first salmon farm in Scotland to be ASC certified. It is also the first UK aquaculture farm to be ASC certified.
The first salmon farm in Scotland has become certified against the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) Salmon Standard for responsible aquaculture.
The certification body, Food Certification International (trading as Acoura) announced on February 16th that Marine Harvest Scotland's Leven Farm is the company's tenth farm to gain ASC certification, and the first in the UK.
The Leven Farm gained its ASC certification following an independent assessment by the accredited certifier Food Certification International, Certifiers are accredited by the independent organisation, Accreditation Services International (ASI).
ASC strives to have a fully transparent certification processes. The announcement of a farm audit must be publicly visible for at least 30 days before the actual audit takes place. Once the farm has been assessed by an ASC approved auditor a draft farm audit report is produced, this is published on ASC's website for a two week public consultation period. Once the farm has been successfully certified, the certificate is also available on the website.
The ASC Salmon Standard was launched in summer 2012. By meeting the standard, certified salmon farms must demonstrate that they use responsible aquaculture practises that minimise environmental and social impact.
The salmon standard requires unprecedented levels of transparency on farm performance data, sourcing of feed ingredients, disease transmission between farms and the wild salmon population, controlling escapes into the wild, use of therapeutics and antibiotics, site impacts and labour issues on farms.
